The Government announcement abolishing MR licences over the next couple of years will likely see an increase in the number of new MR installations around Australia. Comprehensive safety training of both current and new MR staff will be imperative. Dr Kanal’s course is intense, has depth, will ensure you leave with a far better grasp of the subject and will instil confidence in your decision making process.
“Remote MR Scanning and the Future of MR Techs and MR Scanning in Australia and New Zealand”
Free extra lecture Sunday evening – open to all.
Dr Kanal has taught more people about MR safety issues than any other physician in the world today – over 8000 registrants to date!
The Kanal Method for clinical decision-making teaches you to;
a, Confidently Implement a formal standardised approach to scan/not scan in regards to patients with devices/implants/foreign bodies
b, Improve Patient Safety
c, Increase throughput at your site
Dr. Kanal’s MRMD/MRSO MR Safety Training Course is designed to help educate Physicians, MR Technologists and other MR staff about the unique safety considerations associated with all magnetic resonance environments. A primary course objective is to introduce the attendee to the Kanal Method – a methodical, standardized, prospectively defined approach to confidently assess and pseudo-quantify risks versus potential benefits of proceeding with a requested MR examination. This pertains to specific MR scanner, hardware and parameter settings for patients in whom there may be implanted devices and/or foreign bodies. The course not only helps the attendee understand the potential risks of a specific requested MR study, but it also teaches the attendee steps that might be undertaken to potentially mitigate those risks to a clinically acceptable level.
Objectives:
• Understanding the three fields/energies intrinsic to the MR imaging process, their unique temporal distributions, spatial distributions and magnitudes and the unique risks associated with each of these energies/fields.
• Introducing and applying steps that might be undertaken in order to mitigate MR-associated risks to clinically acceptable levels.
• “Putting it all together”: The Kanal Method. Introducing, defining, and applying a standardized approach for pseudo-quantifying and assessing risks versus benefits for any requested MR study on a device/implant/foreign body patient.
Sunday Night Extra Course Detail
“Remote MR scanning is here – and is growing rapidly.” Quoting Dr. Kanal, “There is no corner of the world that will not be experiencing remote MR scanning in the next few years.” Dr. Kanal has added a special focus session to be held on Sunday night on this topic. During this session he will explain what is happening today in the US with remote MR imaging technology and the varied safety approaches that have been undertaken to date when scanning remotely. Most importantly, Dr Kanal will introduce Divided Liability Remote MR Scanning as a standardized international approach for overseeing safe MR practices while remotely scanning patients.
Remote MR scanning WILL change how we practice MRI and how we execute MR studies in Australia/New Zealand. This is an opportunity to be part of that change and to help shape the discussions, timing, and methods that we will be adopting. This is such an important part of our chosen profession’s future that we have waived all registration fees for attendance at this session. Even if you are not planning on attending the conference, I hope you take the time and make the effort to attend this session and actively help shape our own MR imaging future.
Emanuel Kanal Information
EMANUEL KANAL, MD, FACR, FISMRM, MRMD/SE, AANG
DIRECTOR, MAGNETIC RESONANCE SERVICES PROFESSOR OF RADIOLOGY AND NEURORADIOLOGY
Dr. Kanal has been involved in researching and teaching the world about magnetic resonance (MR) safety issues for more than 30 years, since the introduction of MRI as a clinical diagnostic tool. Having chaired the first magnetic resonance safety committee ever created, he also chaired numerous other MR safety committees and has been continually involved in and/or leading MR safety initiatives ever since. These include, among others, having chaired the MR Safety Committee for the American College of Radiology from its inception in 2001 until the summer of 2012, being awarded fellowship in the American College of Radiology as well as the International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine, and being named a Special Government Employee to the Food and Drug Administration on MR safety issues for both the Division of Medical Imaging and Hematology Products/Drug Safety group (of the Office of Surveillance and Epidemiology) regarding magnetic resonance contrast agents as well as the FDA Center for Devices and Radiological Health regarding all matters relating to magnetic resonance safety.
